Chapter 21

The Meeting

Shipp had let everyone know that she wanted everyone to gather in the crew section lounge, the only lounge the Carpenter family had ever used in any event, or knew how to get to without Shipp’s handy little arrows guiding them. She had gotten some static about why now, and why did they have to have a meeting where they were all physically present, as they had not been doing that for some time. She just repeated the request, and then ignored them. She knew that not a one of them would even consider not showing up, their natural curiosity would not allow it.

She was not looking forward to this meeting. She had made arrangements with Jane to hang out in her temporary quarters one deck down until she called on her to appear. She knew this was going to upset Daniel a good deal. They had a lot of history together, she knew Daniel thought he knew and understood her well. An excuse she did not even now have complete confidence in, but suspected her immediate emotional attachment to Rob from the very first day he had come aboard was probably responsible for almost everything she had done. She also realized that when Daniel, in particular, started putting the time frame together and realized that she must have started her work to create Jane almost immediately after Thomas and his family had come aboard, and then realized she had been keeping secrets from him for at least a full six months, he would be devastated! She was not sure how Thomas was going to react, but when this fact either occurred to Cheryl on her own, or Daniel pointed it out, she also was not going to react well. The only two people she wasn’t worried about were Rob and Jane. Rob had known for weeks and was a willing accomplice. Jane had already made it plain that she had not existed when these
